Expensify Card 3D Secure Verification
Some online purchases require extra verification through 3D Secure (sometimes called Verified by Visa).
3D Secure is a Visa authentication protocol used during certain online transactions. For the Expensify Card, this verification always requires entering a one-time passcode (OTP) sent by SMS.
The verification appears directly on the merchant’s website during checkout.
How 3D Secure verification works for the Expensify Card
If 3D Secure is required during checkout:
- Enter your Expensify Card details as usual.
- After submitting payment, a verification prompt will appear.
- Enter the one-time passcode (OTP) sent to your phone by SMS.
- Submit the code to complete authentication.
What to do if your 3D Secure transaction is declined
If you enter the wrong code or do not complete verification in time, the transaction will be declined.
To proceed:
- Restart the checkout process with the merchant.
- Wait for a new SMS code.
- Enter the new code exactly as received.
If you are not receiving the SMS code, check that your phone number is correct in Expensify.
How to update the phone number linked to your Expensify Card
Your 3D Secure one-time passcodes are sent to the phone number listed in your Expensify account.
To update your phone number:
- Choose Account in the navigation tabs (on the left on web, on the bottom on mobile).
- Select Profile.
- Select Phone number.
- Enter your updated phone number and choose Save.
After updating, your new phone number will be used for future 3D Secure SMS codes.
